In the 50s and 60s there were medical colleges that worked under the state and central government but since 1980s many private colleges have been established all over the nation. This is mainly due to the increasing demand for the respected course. The undergraduate course offered by these colleges is MBBS and the post-graduate courses are MD, MS, M.Ch, etc., also there are diploma courses such as DGO (Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology). Students can achieve specialization in, cardiology, clinical pharmacology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, dermatology, bio-chemistry, pathology, and many more.
These medical colleges work under the supervision of the Medical Council of India (MCI). The MCI inspects and improve the quality and standard of these institutes. The Council also grants recognition of medical qualifications and gives certifications to medical colleges, grants registration to medical practitioners and monitors medical practice all over India. There are presently 273 Indian Medical Schools having a capacity of 31298 students. Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Uttar Pradesh, WestBengal are some states that provides best medical professional every year in both MBBS and the post-graduation programs. India has more than 2500 MBBS seats and above 1500 PG seats.

An entrance test is taken by these colleges at national level through which the students get a chance to enter the institutions. Tests such as, All State Level Common Medical Entrance Examination, All India Pre Medical Test, All India Institute of Medical Science, etc are a yearly college entrance examination held in India.
India is one of the few countries, having a large number of medical colleges. Also India is the country with maximum number of medical colleges as presented in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED).
