The Kokoda trail was toured and utilized by the Europeans and native miners in the 1890’s as a route to reach the Yodda Kokoda gold fields. However, it predominantly remembered due its role in the Second World War. In the July of the year 1942, the track was a combat zone for the Japanese and the Australians. The Kokoda track was also witness to the Pacific War World War II which lasted till January 1943. The battles fought ever here were very bloody in nature and resulted in enormous deaths for the Australians and the Japanese alike. What is surprising though is the fact that Australians won the battle despite being outnumbered by a staggering 5 to 1 ratio by the Japanese. These battles were later referred to as the Kokoda Track Campaign.
With the passage of time, the Kokoda track tour is a very popular attraction for tourists and Australians alike. The Australians regard the tour as a pilgrimage as many of the Australians lost their relatives in the battles fought over here. While tourists get to witness many other attractions such as air craft crash sites, military positions and the contemporary life of the locals. It is therefore not much of surprise to note that the Kokoda trail tour has over 5000 visitors annually.
One more important trivia about the Kokoda trail tour is that though it known as one of the hardest, most challenging hike of the world, it was successfully completed by Paralympian Kurt Fearnle an Australian who completed the 96 kilometer stretch by walking on his hands as he does not have legs. The track is also known as one of the most forbidding and notorious ones as it already claimed 6 lives this year alone. The Kokoda track, is in no ways meant for those seeking cheap thrills, and is not willing to endure the limits of their bodily endurance.
