Finding out that an IP Network Camera, Internet Camera, and an IP Camera are just different names for a Network Camera shouldn't come as much of a surprise, though it probably never occurred to you what that could mean for your surveillance pursuits. IP Network Cameras are so common that people can simply skip over their existence without much thought. The truth is that we often forget that an IP Camera is actually a technological advance that is becoming so commonplace that we use it or have it used on us for the simplest of situations.
In the past, it used to be that when we walked in a store, or down the street, it would be an easy thing to spot the lens of the cameras that happened to be watching our every move. Limited in their capabilities, and sometimes painfully obvious in their placement, bulky security cameras became the everyday norm, and when their numbers started to gradually reduce to the point where they seemed almost non-existent, we noticed but thought nothing of it. The switch from bulk to sleek efficiency was so smooth that the only ones who could truly appreciate what was going on were the people who were using the technology. It wasn't that long ago that we were confined in the dark ages where the only way to transmit live video feed to another location was if you had an entire broadcasting team and a truckload of equipment. And even then, there were time lags between the actual viewing and the outputted showing and sometimes that feed had to be recorded since the security device itself could not send live shots.
Thanks to network recording software, an IP Camera can be operated by either a local or remote computer as long as it's part of that initial setup. Location doesn't matter since the video server or IP Network Camera that is being used can allow for anything up to remote accessibility to surveillance on the move (picture a van on the move with a wall of televisions providing non-stop feed from cameras in different areas, only not as complicated or space consuming). Many people make their living through the use of IP Cameras. Whether that use is individual or corporate, it doesn't negate the fact that an IP Camera has become essential in some respects as far as security and information are concerned.
Another popular use of IP Cameras is through the connection of people all over the country. Not in a we are the world kind of way, but more like in the facial recognition in airports, bus terminals, and etc kind of way. If a person is caught by an IP Camera with facial recognition capabilities once, then searching for that face again in future video streams isn't just possible, it's almost easy. The software maps a person's face, height, bone structure, ect. and moves through surveillance footage until it finds as exact a match as possible. It's this type of capability that is used by government agencies, private investigators, and in some cases, the police when they're in search of missing people or criminals. That's just more proof that while the use of network camera software may be going unnoticed by the general public, it is by no means going to waste. Whether we like to admit it or not, network camera software will play an essential role in how we protect each other and ourselves, as well as gather essential information, on both a national and international scale.
