Increased awareness of environmental issues have led to changes for many people. More and more people regularly recycle, purchase eco-friendly products and monitor energy usage in their homes. Lately, there has been a lot of buzz about alternative fuels and their role in helping our planet.
Alternative fuels are fuels derived from renewable sources and can encompass anything from solar energy to hydroelectric plants. Some of the more popular alternative fuels are biodiesel, ethanol, and wind turbines. With increased technology and availability, these alternative energy sources are becoming less expensive and easier to use in our everyday lives.
So what are the benefits to using an alternative fuel over a traditional fuel, such as oil or gas?
Environmental concerns are one of the main reasons that consumers are demanding alternate energy products. Folks are becoming more aware that once fossil fuels are gone, they are gone for good. Alternative fuels can be renewed, severely reducing the chance of a future energy crisis. Greenhouse gas emissions, caused by the consumption of oil and coal based fuels, have contributed heavily to global warming and unhealthy air quality. Alternative energy emissions contain very little to no toxins and can eventually, with widespread usage, heal the damage done to the atmosphere.
Waste-to-energy plants are becoming popular as well. These plants take garbage and other refuse that would otherwise end up in a landfill and turn it into energy. Not only are these plants creating a renewable energy source, but they are also reducing the amount of pollutants that take up precious space on our planet.
A little known advantage of alternative fuels is the national economic stimulation potential. In fact, the reason that alternative fuels were created was to attempt to reduce the nations dependence on foreign energy resources! Importing traditional fuels is not only expensive, but also a burden on our environment. Barges use immense amounts of non-renewable resources to ship oil and coal and leave a messy trail of pollutants in their wake. Oil spills from shipping accidents have caused worldwide environmental and economic damage that can take years to alleviate. Alternative fuels can be produced locally, stimulating job growth and local economy.
Despite all of the benefits, many people are loathe to make the switch to alternative fuels and the products that rely on these sources. Why? Alternative fuels and products tend to cost more than traditional fuels. However, with increasing demand and higher production, the cost of utilizing alternative energy sources is lowering every year. The government as well as some corporations offer incentives to help offset the cost of using alternative fuels, including tax benefits and reduced sign-up fees. Advocates and producers of alternative fuels continue to educate the public about the benefits of using alternative energy sources with positive results. The demand for alternative energy for our homes, cars and other aspects of life will not only drive down costs, but also improve our economy and, most importantly, our environment.
