The non-techies often come up with numerous questions regarding the SMTP server. In fact, setting-up this server is quite like a riddle to them and so they approach the computer engineers. Recently I have encountered a question from an innocent guy and may be several others seek for the fitting answer to this query. The question is regarding the specification of the SMTP server while dispatching mail through CDO. As per as the commonest configuration of CDO for 2000, an external SMTP needs no specification and instead, the local Microsoft transfer protocol server is used for effective message delivery. However, precise specification is a need in a few cases and such a distinct requirement often comes as confusion for the users.
As an expert and experienced person in this field, I have found that the users are able to send messages through a separate SMTP mail server and via CDO. An interesting feature is ‘Smart Host’ setting on the local server level. It does a good job of mail forwarding to another SMTP server with the help of the local transfer protocol service.
In replying to the above-stated question, I can only suggest the person to get a local SMTP server installed. Then go for the configuration and finally run it. It is not a big task to get all these done. But remember the warning that you may experience open relay and invasion of spams may be a persisting problem in the event of wrong configuration. So, step forward cautiously in times of SMTP mail server configuration. If you install only a single outgoing SMTP server in your organization, it will be facile for you to monitor and promise a much-anticipated security.
I have taken initiatives to find out the way for the proper use of CDO and specify an out-house server for the email handling. Unfortunately, I have not found significant dossiers regarding this issue. So, I am in the earnest quest of the flood of information on this subject.
