An important study conducted by European epidemiologists has found a nearly 40 percent rise in a type of brain tumor among people who has been using cell phones for a decade or more.

This study has been based on the records collected in certain European countries and is said to be an extremely important piece of information that should become widely known. It included more than a thousand glioma cases. There were over a hundred cases with 10 or more years of mobile phone use.

Senior members of the US public health community have called for preventive measures to limit leukemia risks to children from cell phone use.

International cell phone companies have not yet made their comments, but every time studies telling possible health damage from mobile phones are in print, the companies in Israel notes that it observes all Israeli policy and standards.

Swedish National Institute for Working Life researchers studied around 900 people who were diagnosed with some type of malignant brain tumor. They found a link with mobile phone use in all the cases. Around 80 of these nearly 900 cases, patients started using mobile phones early and continued it for a long time. Most tumors were developed in the areas near the ears wher we hold the phone while talking. These figures suggest that heavy users of mobile phones had a 240 percent increased risk for a malignant tumor. The report has also said that using hands-free is a suitable alternative.

Slow-growing acoustic neuromas are non cancerous in nature. They develop on the nerve linking the inner ear and the brain. It may cause hearing loss. When the tumor grows in size it may push brain tissue and if left untreated, it can be dangerous.

When you use a cell phone, it emits radiation in the range of radio-frequency. A section of this frequency gets absorbed by the areas closest to the handset. Though the mechanism is still unknown and the researchers are trying to find out the exact modality of this absorption.

Researchers found that the brain cell DNA degenerates when exposed for long to the radio-frequency radiation. Although the immune system may repair DNA breaks, but at times it may lead to mutation which is permanent change in the DNA structure. And, this may lead to producing cancerous growth.

All researchers and many epidemiologist are of the opinion that it usually takes nearly 20 years for developing such solid tumors. In most of the cases once they are diagnosed they are beyond treatment.
