At present, the University of Flensburg is in the process of developing the Uni-cat Flensburg or the Flensburg catamaran. The catamaran which is a fast sailing boat will be made rotor driven by this. However, this is not the first time that the Flensburg University has come out with such a plan or design; earlier it made similar attempts, but they did not prove much helpful to the cause.
The main advantage of the telescopic flettner rotor is in its folding ability. This type of facility comes handy particularly during the time of the boat's navigation in a restricted area. The collapsing or the folding ability can also prove useful at the time of loading operations and discharging operations of the ship. Compared to the traditional sail, a telescopic flettner rotor is much more effective as well as efficient in its operations.
The technology behind a telescopic flettner rotor is highly sophisticated and well researched. State-of-the-art mechanisms are in operation for making the flettner rotor work to its full capacity. However, advanced researches are still in the process for upgrading the design and the application together. Because of its practical usage, the telescopic flettner rotor, even managed to earn praise from the great scientist Dr. Albert Einstein. He welcomed the concept and showed great interest in its future developments.
Anton Flettner was the man behind all the modern developments of the rotor. He was also the president of Berlin's Anton Flettner Aircraft Corporation. This corporation was engaged in manufacturing helicopters. At the time of World War II, the organization supplied great number of helicopters to Hitler's army. The interesting part of the story is that all these helicopters used a pair of rotor for their smooth functioning. However, the major drawback with the helicopters made by Flettner rested in its gear box. Later, the Americans used a much more improved version of this model.
But Flettner did not lose hope. He sorted out the problem and came out with a brilliant concept. His new rotor helicopter had a carrying capacity of almost forty people. This certainly proved very useful for the army. The fact that the consumption of power in the engine was less, also worked in its favor. It ensured lesser usage of the rotor gear. Based on Flettner's calculation, the gear life of his new model had the capacity of lasting almost ten years.
