When it comes to live sports coverage in the United Kingdom, BBC is the way to go. And although most people watch live sport on tv nowadays; not so long ago, they were actually dependent on the radio. The original home of live sports where people in the United Kingdom used to tune in to was BBC Radio Live Five.

Today, it has already been outfitted to a new name: BBC Radio 5 Live. It's interesting how those two words were swapped. Some presumed that it was for better marketing - considering the former sounded a bit off and a tad bit too awkward.

It is a major radio station that specializes in sports commentaries, live and in-depth streaming, and phone-ins, of course. The great thing about BBC Radio 5 Live is the fact that it caters to all kinds of popular sports that is available and known in the United Kingdom. Aside from the fact that they broadcast all of the major sports events being staged and held in the United Kingdom; they also broadcast most sporting events that of interest to UK listeners.

This radio frequency was streamed out in all TV providers as well - be it in analogue or even digital signal. Interestingly, the forms and kinds of streaming it has did not necessarily stop there. BBC Radio 5 Live is also being streamed online. Although suffice to say, the streaming has been a bit limited due to restrictions of rights. This is particularly true when it comes to events coverage. And as such, some live sports streaming are not exactly available online.

The show has been highly commended by The Times and The Scotsman. Both journalism organisations described the station as both professional and having smooth transitions from one topic to another. And as a credit to them; the claim has substance considering the truth in the statement. After all, BBC Radio 5 Live has a more casual, engaging and relaxed tone compared to the usual BBC output quality. Perhaps that is one of the finest points of the channel - its tone. People have something to connect with as they settle down with a steaming cup of hot cocoa in their downy couches, listening to updates about their favourite teams playing their favourite sports. Surely, for some people; nothing else could possibly be better than that. It is simply the perfect nightcap or even the perfect way to end the day after all that stressful and backbreaking work in the big city.

The station has actually been nominated 11 times in the Sony Awards and has won 5 times. It has won one gold medal and four silver ones. It has won a particularly identifying award for their coverage of the Asian tsunami back in the year 2004. They were also the live broadcasters of the 2006 World Cup as with talkSPORT. However, Radio 5 obviously had the upper hand because of the fact that they own 6 out of the 7 rights packages.

Improvements kept happening and there was absolutely no other way to go but up for Radio 5. Come year 2002, their broadcasting has been converted to 100% digital which only made it more attractive for its audience. And up until this day, Radio 5 has been looked up to for Premier League Commentaries.
