Fresh Water Aquarium Algae is probably one of the most common problems that aquarium lovers endure. Here we cover 3 procedures to lessen the issue or ideally remove it all together.

1. Physically Getting Rid of Algae Yourself

Frequently, with an excess of light present utilized as illumination in your aquarium green algae will appear covering the glass surfaces of your tank and you may also have green water trouble. You might take off the algae by employing a suitable scraping tool with a keem edge. Some folk utilize steel wool but you would need to be particular as you do not want to make any scratches on the glass itself by employing too much force.

But using steel wool with sand around, particularly at the bottom of the tank, will increase the danger of marking the glass.

Not only will the glass be coated by freshwater aquarium algae but the plants will be coated as well. It is practically impossible to take away all the algae from plants.

Beneath electric light, blue-green algae are more likely to be a nuisance, residing not only on the surfaces, but also on plants. The blue-green algae may be scraped from the glass as normal, but to get it off the plants is practically impossible. Cut down on the lighting ferocity and see how the problem hopefully decreases.

2. Chemical Method

Another way to treat the issue is to utilize a chemical substance. However you can't do this with live pets in your aquarium. You would have to develop another aquarium that fundamentally has water that has aged so that your pets can be safely put in it for several hours. Transfer your pets and invertebrates etc safely to their temporary aquarium and introduce copper sulphate to the empty fresh water aquariums.

With respect to the amount to employ, work out what one ppm might be for the amount of water in your tank. Stir in and leave for a few hours before substituting the majority of the water. After your pets are re-introduced to the tank you'll need to monitor the water quality and carry out water changes as you would do with a new tank to ensure the nitrates don't reach high amounts.

Relocating your pets about too often is not fantastic for their health so consider it a method for you to utilize only when you have to.

3. Employng A Specific Fish To Get Rid Of Algae

Further to good upkeep there is an yet another ongoing method you can use. Buy an algae eater such as the Plecostomus. This fish is not going to win any beauty competition any time soon - but it may help keep your aquarium algae to a low level.

Some folk say they put more waste/nutrients into the water and algae still thrives but if one does water changes, then it should minimise their additional output products, as with any other fish you may add.

IMPORTANT: A Plecostomus (also known as) can grow up to one foot six inches! You might be all right with a young Plecostamus in a ten gallon aquarium but when it develops to that length you'd need a 55 gallon aquarium!
