There are many steps you can take to allergy-proof your environment and help avoid allergy triggers. Here are some recommendations to help you prepare for allergy season this year.
Windows
Pollen dances on the wind like Olympic figure skaters on ice. If you don’t keep your windows closed, you’d better invest in more Kleenex. Allergy sufferers who are sensitive to outdoor pollen may want to keep windows closed and use air conditioning instead.
Pets
Pet dander and saliva are some of the most common allergens. If you have indoor pets, bathe them frequently and launder any linens they come into contact with.
Laundry
Mold loves to grow on wet clothes. If you leave your clothes in the washer for any period of time after the cycle is finished, you run the risk of wearing moldy, allergy-inducing clothes. Remove your clothes from the washing machine promptly and save yourself from constant sneezing fits.
Bathrooms
Another place mold loves to grow is in your bathroom: on shower curtains, towels, and tiles. Invest in effective mold-killing solutions and clean your bathrooms at least once a week.
Bedrooms
If your allergies are severe, you may want to consider plastic covers for pillows, mattresses, and box springs. Also, wash your bedding once a week in hot water.
Carpets and Rugs
Dust, mold, and other allergens thrive in throw rugs and carpets. Limit your use of rugs throughout the house and vacuum at least twice a week. If you must have rugs, make sure they are washable.
Blinds and Drapes
Long drapes are a dust molecule’s Cancun; replace them with window shades. Venetian blinds require frequent dusting.
Cleaning
Many of these recommendations require some old-fashioned elbow grease. But remember: cleaning is the fastest way to an allergy attack, if you don’t properly protect yourself! Wear a mask and gloves when cleaning, vacuuming or painting to limit dust and chemical exposure.
Filter the Air
No matter how much cleaning and maintenance you do, you’ve lost half the battle if you’re not purifying your air. It is absolutely critical to invest in an effective, Energy Star-qualified air purifier for your bedroom, home, and office.
The Vornado® Air Quality System 500 Whole Room Air Purifier uses Vornado’s signature Vortex Technology to effectively circulate and filter all the air in the room for a new level in indoor air quality satisfaction.
