Dampness is of three major types. These are penetration, rising and condensation dampness.
Penetration dampness occurs when your external walls trap moisture. The moisture then penetrates into the inner walls. It is this type of dampness that is responsible for the cracking and peeling off of paint as well as the growth of mould and mildew. It is important to understand that unless you deal with the problem, water will continuously seep into the walls causing dampness that will in-turn cause the structure of your home to rot.
Condensation is also known to cause dampness. If you have toilet cisterns and pipes that leak, you are likely to get condensation dampness. On the other hand, rising dampness results when ground water finds it way onto the walls of your home. If the skirting boards in your house are decaying, the walls are staining and discoloring the paint is peeling and/or the timber floor is rotting, there is a very good chance you have rising dampness.
Dealing with dampness is not rocket science. As a matter of fact you can deal with the problem yourself. You simply need to identify and deal with the root cause. If it is leaking pipes and old gutters, you need to replace them. This will help dry-out the basement and help you ascertain that the problem will not recur. Nonetheless, if this is not your forte you can hire an expert. Often times, professionals perform what is known as basement tanking. The process which is also called damp proofing solves the dampness problem once and for all.
There are loads of individuals and firms that provide tanking services. Understand that not all are credible. Prior to hiring an expert, inquire about credentials and level of experience. Do also make a point of talking to some of their previous clients. They are best placed to tell you if you are making a good decision employing particular individuals.
