Depression takes many different forms. Without realizing it or accepting it, many Americans suffer from some sort of depression. It is estimated that some 14 million Americans are affected by depression. Fewer than 4.7 million of those, about 1/3, will seek medical help. What are the reasons? Perhaps it is because depression is classified as a mental illness. No one wants to be classified with that label. People who suffered from mental illness were, at one time in history, ridiculed by society. In many cases those with slight signs of depression were locked away in state institutions for the mentally ill. Times have changed now, thank goodness. But the old stereotypes are still with us. This motivates many people to hide their condition from others or even from themselves.

Many elements make up depression. Diagnosis isn't simple. Many things have to be considered such as genetics, biology and even outside influences. Drugs, alcohol and stress all can play a major role in the development of depression. These elements and more can lead to depression. In what ways can those who suffer from depression be treated? Just as there are many factors that can cause depression-there are many options to cure it as well. Which option is the best for someone who suffers with depression may be dependent on each individual on a case-to-case basis

There are many supposed cures for depression. Methods of treatment that are safe and that work to cure depression do exist. When considering which option is best there are a few considerations that must be examined. Is the treatment proven clinically to be effective for depression? Is a prescription drug or herbal treatment being applied in the proper quantity to show results? Has the method been accepted in accordance with high quality control standards? Let's examine some of the more popular cures.

To treat many forms of depression doctors have typically prescribed a combination of drugs and psychotherapy. SSRI, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are prescribed to treat depression. One of the most popular, Prozac, was first used in the United States in 1988. Many others such as Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox have followed it. Case history shows all of these to be effective. These drugs have a lot of side effects. That's the reason natural treatments are gaining popularity. A popular herbal cure is St. Johns Wort extract. In order to work it must contain between 3 and 5 % hyperforin. It has been proven to work as well as Prozac with fewer side effects. If those who have the disease don't seek treatment, a cure does no good. If you or someone you know suffers from depression seek medical attention immediately.
