In today's busy world almost everyone has stress in their lives. We are bombarded with stress in our lives from so many different areas. Not only do we have to deal with the usual stresses of work and home, but we are also have stress in the world around us as well. We deal with traffic jams, street noise, and technology such as TV's and radios, computers and phones. Not to mention the fact that we are surrounded by artificial light throughout the day and night. It is no wonder that we are stressed! nnEven if you don't realize it, your body starts to desire peace and quiet when faced with stressful situations. Everyone has wanted to climb in bed and crawl under the covers at some time of their life! We need to take the time to recharge and revitalize so we can keep up with the daily stress we face. If we don't take the time to relieve stress and anxiety in our lives, we may have problems with depression, anxiety or chronic physical illness. By practicing stress management techniques we can help keep stress from building up and creating an emotional breakdown or a physical illness. nnThere are many kinds of stress management techniques that can be helpful in overcoming the stress that we encounter. Some ways of dealing with stress can be as simple as stopping or overcoming the cause of the stress, being more assertive, or stepping away from the cause of the stress all together. nnWe find we encounder quite a bit of stress from our daily jobs. There are two main causes of workplace stress: the job itself and coworkers. nPressures at work can include difficult tasks that can be overwhelming, upcoming deadlines, and not having enough time to accomplish the assignments we need to do. Although job stress will not go away, it can be managed. If you find yourself constantly being interrupted while trying to do your work, see if you can alter your work schedule so you can work when there are fewer people in the office. If this won't work, you can use time management ideas to complete difficult jobs at the slowest time of your workday. nnWe all have to deal with difficult people and on the job this is a great source of stress. Irritating coworkers and tense bosses can create a lot of stress as well as upset clients. By learning to be more assertive you can express your concerns without coming across as being aggressive or threatening. If you need to, find a book or an assertiveness training course that will teach you how to set well defined boundaries. By having boundaries and letting others know when they cross those boundaries you will become free from the emotional stress caused by working with difficult people. Assertiveness training can also help with stressful family relationships too. nnSome other ideas to help relieve stress on the job are simple things such as taking scheduled breaks, creating a clean and welcoming workspace, and having the same starting and ending time to your day. Allowing time for an uninterrupted break helps you to regroup and return to your job with a fresh outlook. A simple 15 minute break can do wonders for your productivity. Also, if your workspace is an area you feel comfortable and enjoy being, your quality of work will improve. You will be surprised how small changes like these can relieve your job related stress. nnA good way to overcome stress is to develop a positive attitude. nRemember that no one has a perfect life and that stressful situations happen to everyone. If you have the attitude that this too shall pass, you are freeing yourself from unwanted anxiety and worry. We all have storms to weather, but we can learn to ride out the storm rather than be consumed by it. nnThere is no cure all for stress and stress will always be a part of life as we know it. But by learning to change our thinking from negative to positive, becoming more assertive, practicing time management and looking for the good around us we will see that life is great. You can reduce your stress and find the peace and contentment you desire.
