Stomach and esophageal cancer prognosis and the subsequent treatment options can depend on various factors like the cancer disease’s stage or extent, if it had affected various parts of the esophagus or found concentrated on part of the esophagus, if spread to other body parts apart from the esophagus or not, the tumor or cancerous tissue’s size and general health of the patient.
Stomach and esophageal cancer prognosis is found to be better and easily controllable when the disease is found out in the early stage of incidence but when it is in the advanced stages during diagnosis then the stomach and esophageal cancer prognosis is said to be poor and sometime without any hopes too. It does not mean that patients who are in their later stages might not have any hopes as the stomach and esophageal cancer could be treated well but might not be fully cured. Such patients can always take part in clinical trials which aim at enhancing the treatment options for the patients and in some cases might even get cured to some extent.
Adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer which affects both the stomach (upper portion) and esophagus (lower portion) as it occurs in the junction connecting both the above organs. The presence of esophageal cancer or tumor in patients can result in dysphagia or hard to swallow foods or liquids and various other symptoms including pain. Normally they are detected using biopsy. When the tumors or cancerous tissues are localized and smaller in size they can be treated using surgery with intent of curing the disease and prevent it from further spreading it to other organs or surrounding tissues of the esophagus and stomach. But if the size of the tumor is bigger in size then the chances of treating it with surgery or other methods might be impossible as they might be inoperable. Such patients are treated using palliative care and growth of the cancerous tissues or tumors could be delayed using radiotherapy, chemotherapy or a combination of both the therapies.
The prognosis of stomach and esophageal cancer in the advanced stages of cancer might be very poor and might also depend greatly on patient’s various other medical complications and extent to which the disease has spread.
Risk factor is increased when the patients suffering from esophageal and stomach cancer is in someway carry a heredity of cancer and that too with close relatives, if consumes more alcohol and smokes heavily, presence of GERD, HPV, more than sixty years of age, if the patient happens to be a man, if esophagus is injured due to swallowing of acids or strong alkalines, consumes more nitrosamine in diet and so on
