Before answering the question, “Is esophageal cancer a slow disease?” let us first know what actually the disease is and how it spreads. When the esophagus of a person consists of malignant cells or cancerous cells, the person is said to have esophageal cancer.  Esophagus is an organ which acts as a passage for liquids and foods from the mouth region to the stomach.  When the esophagus consists of cancerous cells the lining of the esophagus bleeds and results in the formation of fistulas or abnormal channels between the trachea and the esophagus.  Normally the progression of the cancerous cells is slow but in some t hey can spread rapidly and can worsen the condition of the person.  This can answer the question, “Is esophageal cancer a slow disease?”

Esophageal cancer most often affects men who are in their fifth or sixth decade of life than when compared to women.  When esophageal cancer is found in the earlier stages, treatments may be aimed at curing the disease but most often the treatment methods relieve the symptoms and might not be cure the disease completely especially when esophageal cancer is in the advanced stages.

It is believed that reducing the consumption of alcohol, smoking and drinking hot beverages can help in preventing the onset of esophageal cancer in people who are highly susceptible to the disease.

There are various types of treatment options for controlling the symptoms of esophageal cancer and for improving the quality of life of the sufferers.  But then combination treatment therapies combining both alternative therapies and conventional therapies have shown good results when compared to only the contemporary therapies.  Surgery is one of the therapies which aim at removing the malignant cells or cancerous growth from the esophagus.  When the tumor is of a bigger size, a laser surgery might be opted for bringing down the size of the tumor and for opening a passage inside the stomach.

Some doctors might also suggest radiation therapy along with surgery for lowering the size of the tumor and for preventing the spread of the disease.  In addition to this, chemotherapy might also be used for destroying the cancer cells that have remained after the radiation therapy and surgery.

In the beginning stages esophageal cancer can be a slow disease but in the advanced stages they might act a fast disease.  Researchers believe that cancerous cells are formed when the cells of the body are deprived of oxygen that when the patients are exposed to abundant quantities of oxygen, the cancerous cells might not be able to sustain it and might get destroyed.
