Many men who have enlarged prostate issues also deal with overactive bladder as a result. There are many prescription medications that can counter this, such as darifenacin (Enablex), oxybutynin (Ditropan, Ditropan XL and Oxytrol, a skin patch), tolterodine (Detrol, Detrol LA), trospium (Sanctura), and solifenacin (Vesicare). However, given the various side effects of these medications, some are turning to herbs in order to treat this condition. The thing to remember about herbal remedies is that often, the "studies" they cite are done in house- that is, the manufacturer of the herb is the one conducting the study. Still, while this may be true, there are some that do help, a bit and are worth asking your doctor about if you are considering them. Before you do try any of these, you must discuss this with your doctor as urinary incontinence is something that you will need to be sure isn't caused by something else.

In studies involving Parkinson's patients, Magnesium has been shown to help control incontinence caused by bladder spasticity. Doctors are now studying this mineral because they believe that it also may help to control spasms that keep bladders from fully emptying and when taken at bedtime, it has also been shown to improve sleep as it does seem to help control the need to urinate frequently during the night.

Pumpkin seed is actually also another that has had clinical trials to see what benefits it may have on incontinence. It has also been shown to be excellent for overall prostate health and shows a great deal of benefit for being a great restorative supplement. Pumpkin seed has also been shown to reduce the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which often causes prostate issues. Quite high in magnesium, iron and zinc, pumpkin seeds have multiple reasons for being one of the best things that you can snack on to help have better prostate health.

Most men have heard of Saw Palmetto for prostate health, and the reason is certainly valid. Saw Palmetto also reduces 5-alpha reductase, it does seem to be very effective in cases of enlarged prostate, however, there has been no study that can figure out just why, yet. If you are a man who is having urinary issues due to enlarged prostate, Saw Palmetto is a very good supplement to be taking, but be careful- if your incontinence is caused by something apart from your prostate, it probably will not work for you.

As with any supplement, making sure that you have discussed the intended herbal remedy with your doctor to be sure that it is not going to interact badly with your other medications or cause you issues is important. However, for the most part, there really is no harm in the above herbal supplements when well informed and taken with care. There are many other supplements and formulas not mentioned here that may be beneficial, but it is always best to do your homework to be sure that you are getting what you want and need.
