Our immune system assist us in staying healthy by avoiding illness to spread in our body. Put simply, our immune system allows us to stay alive. The minute the immune system is overloaded or stop working properly, we get ill and may even die.
The human body is an ideal ground for many germs and they sure would like to get inside and attack the body. It is the immune system duty to keep these germs out. But if they do manage to get in, it is also the immune system job to look for and kill the attackers.
The first barrier these invaders encounter is the skin, which provides an excellent guard for the body. The skin is hard to penetrate and is made of an array of substances that are risky to the invaders. Holes such as the eyes, the nose and the mouth, which appear less difficult to invade have some defence too. They are protected by liquids that are able to capture mean invaders.
Obviously, immune systems are always busy and looking for pathogens that are trying to heart our body. It is not an easy task because the first thing the immune system has to do is to distinguish and keep in mind millions of various enemies.
Also, it has to fabricate the proper defence like secretions and cells to match up with and wipe out each germ. This is done with the help of a complicated communication network. Millions of organized cells get together and exchange information back and forth. Once the immune cells receive the alert, they start creating powerful chemicals. But the key to a healthy immune system is the fantastic ability to distinguish the body' s own cells and the foreign cells.
This is important since without this ability the immune system will not have a clue of which organisms to assault or not. This is done with the help of "marker molecules". When the immune system defenders meet organisms transporting markers that say "foreign", they immediately send an attack. The faster the response the better they can eliminate the invaders.
