One of the leading surgical implants used in the treatment of hernia is SURGIMESH. This surgical implant is made by a French company called ASPIDE MEDICAL. The company was started in the year 1994. It took the help surgeons while designing this surgical implant.

Hernia is said to occur when an organ starts to protrude outside the area or cavity where it should be. Some of the different types of hernia are umbilical hernia, diaphragmatic hernia, perineal hernia, and sports hernia.

Umbilical hernia is said to occur when parts of the intestine starts protruding through an opening found in the abdominal muscles. This type of hernia occurs either at the navel (bellybutton) or around it. If the size of the umbilical hernia is small, in most cases it will heal itself by the time the child is around two-four years old. If this does not happen by the time the child is four years old, then surgery will be required. Babies who are born prematurely or have low birth weight face greater risk of suffering from this type of hernia. Afro-American children face a slightly higher risk of getting umbilical hernia. The hernia affects both girls and boys equally.

Umbilical hernia can happen in the case of adults too. The reason for this is that the navel or bellybutton will continue to be a weak spot. People who are overweight or women who have undergone multiple pregnancies face a greater risk in getting this type of hernia.

Complications umbilical hernia rarely occurs in the case of children. This is not so in the case of adults. Complications arise when the abdominal organ that has protruded out becomes trapped and can’t be pushed back in. The blood supply to the trapped organ will be reduced. This will result in damage to the protruding organ and the umbilical pain.

During the surgery the surgeon has the option of choosing a tension free repair technique. This technique uses a surgical implant including SURGIMESH to keep the abdominal organ in place.

ASPIDE MEDICAL has designed different types of SURGIMESH that can be used to treat hernia.
