Contraceptive pills are used as a method of birth control by most of the females in the world. These pills are generally oral pills. When they are taken daily, they inhibit female fertility. The contraceptive pills are a combination of two female sex hormones, progesterone and estrogen which are responsible in birth control. If used properly and regularly, contraceptive pills have been proved effective up to 99.7%. Morning after pill is an emergency contraceptive pill used as an emergency birth control measure. This pill is generally taken when you have had an unprotected intercourse or your contraceptive measure failed during the intercourse. Morning after pill has to be taken within 72 hours of intercourse. It is advised that the pill should be taken as early as possible, if possible within 12 hours after the intercourse to increase the chances of success. It is not effective if taken any later than 72 hours. It increases the risk factor.

Morning after pill is available in three different types, pills using only progesterone, pills using only estrogen and pills using a mixture of both. The morning after pill works in three ways. First, by preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg; second, by altering the outer covering of the egg that a sperm cannot penetrate it and third, by altering the lining of a womb so that a fertilized egg cannot attach to the uterus.

Females from all around the world use morning after pills. The pill is generally used when it is doubted that the regular contraception method you use has failed or when it hasn’t been used at all. Morning after pill has provided sexual freedom to millions of females around the world. Through clinical trials it has been found that the success rate of morning after pill is over 95%. The success rate of the pill depends on the time it is taken after the intercourse. The sooner it is taken, better are the chances of its success. It should be noted that morning after pill is an emergency contraceptive and should be used only when its need cannot be avoided.

Many females have side effects of the pill. Delayed arrival of periods or sometimes early arrivals are normal side effects. There can be other side effects in many cases such as breast tenderness, weight gain, and water retention in tissues, nausea and spotting between periods. Other uncommon side effects include jaundice, mild rashes, migraine, depression and breast pain. Morning after pill should be taken only once during a menstrual cycle. It does not work if it is taken more than once. Hence to avoid any kind of trouble, one should use their regular method or should abstain from sex. The most important thing that has to be kept in mind is that morning after pill is only an emergency contraceptive method and is not for normal use. Morning after pill does not help in terminating an already conceived pregnancy. It is a wrong myth that is rumored to be true. No contraceptive pill terminates pregnancy, the pills that are available for it are different.
