When someone becomes a drunk, treating the problem should be the same as treating a regular disease - a chronic regular disease. You admit then into hospital, prescribe medication, and make sure that they take it. Only this time, the hospital is a rehab facility, or an alcohol treatment center, and the medication is... abstinence.
Dependence on alcohol is horrible, and it's not easy to terminate. You might need a spell in an alcohol treatment center to wit. And you can be sure that that spell will be no Christmas carol because then your demons will come as they try to help you through the withdrawal phase.
When caught on a rap for disturbing the peace you are bound to be asked to pay a healthy fine. Following this, the judge could ask you to do some community service, and if there is a drunkenness charge to boot, you could end up in jail, or an alcohol treatment center, if you're lucky.
Drunkenness is 'loss of control', according to nineteenth century's Benjamin Rush. Following this, it is reasonable to say that you have to get your control back. You do this best in rehab, nowhere else. Unless you have the willpower to do it by yourself, on your own.
One way to become an alcoholic again after rehab is to pick on the bottle. Too many people think that they have learnt their lesson and can never fall for it again, so they dabble too close. How wrong! Obviously the lessons they learnt weren't punched in hard enough. Wonder what else they didn't learn at the alcohol treatment center.
Life is about discipline. When you cannot discipline yourself, you lose control. This is most often seen when you think of alcoholics and the issues they conjure day in and out. Rehabilitation centers would not be enough if an alcoholic could not discipline self enough to control drinking urges. Only that that is not quite so easy, is it?
There have been a few recorded deaths in alcohol treatment facilities due to the direct effects of withdrawal from the substance. This has caused such homes to exercise more caution in attending to their patients. Although it is advised that the best way to quit is to do it suddenly and totally, such incidences challenge this theory.
