What's So Important About Accent Reduction?

The harsh reality in the world we live in is that, quite truthfully, is not very pretty, if we are honest, and thats not something we will readily admit to. But the very real truth is, those of us with accents, particularly heavy ones, have a very difficult time in many aspects of our society. Over the next few paragraphs, I am going to explain why accent reduction is so important in the world we live in. As I said, these are not popular beliefs, but facts they are and facts they will remain.

First and foremost on our list is in our line of work, our profession. Wrong or right, for better or worse, primarily if you live in the United States, it is difficult to get anywhere in the business world. Now, if you happen to be in a line of work in which you are dealing with the public you might as well just forget it if you have a very thick accent. Customer service is an enormous part of our life. So many people get unbelievably frustrated when they call a company for service, that happens to outsource that portion of the business overseas, and then they get somebody on the other end who they cannot even begin to understand? This can be very disheartening for everyone involved.

Your choice of profession is only the beginning, it gets worse. Our personal lives can have a very big impact in this as well, just by having a thick accent this can also work against us, primarily in trying to have a relationship with a member of the opposite sex. Like it or not, many times we are judged by how we speak. The ever so slight hint of an accent immediately sets off the warning signals and many native born Americans in this country will be hesitant to start a relationship with a foreigner for far too many reasons to go into in the time frame of this article. It may be very unfair, but it is a fact of our lives that we have to deal with and is not just going away any time soon.

Lastly but certainly not least of course, is just simply trying to coexist in the world we live in from day to day. It can be so frustrating to walk into a store, ask for something and the person across the counter does not understand what you are trying to say. The fact of the matter is, most Americans are just not trained to understand someone with a thick or heavy accent. This can be even very intimidating just trying to communicate with another person even if its for something as simple as getting directions or asking for the time.

You really cannot fathom the frustration of having a thick accent unless you have one. Those that unfortunately do, know exactly what Im talking about. So, if you are thinking about inquireing about accent reduction, there is a very real chance that it will be of more help to you than you can possibly imagine. There are some very real solutions if your just willing to seek them out and find them wherever they may be.
