Contrary to popular belief, postcards are more likely to be read than sales letter. People sorting out through their mail are most likely to pick out a post card a read it entirely than open an envelope and read a letter. According to the United States Postal Service, postcards are 94% read than letters.

But it is not just its readability that makes postcards a precious marketing material. They are also cheap to produce and mail. So when you are decided on using post card to promote your business, here are ways to make sure you use them effectively:

1. Choose the right format. The first step to producing an effective post card campaign is to select the format to use. To do this, you need to decide on the purpose of your card. Will you be sending out a simple message where a standard postcard is enough to deliver your message? Or would you need an oversized card to emphasize your message? If you are seeking to generate traffic to your business, a standard postcard with a strong call to action can be enough. Just tell your customers to bring your card when they visit you to receive a freebie. If what you want is sales leads, you need to give your prospects a reason to respond to your marketing. You can use a double postcard which can have a reply card.

2. Design effective cards. After you have decided on the format, you are now ready to put in the design and message to your card. To do this, consider the following pointers: put your headline in bold font to encourage your prospects to read the entire cards. Keep your card fresh organized, and easy to read. Focus on the benefits of your business and give your target customers a reason to respond to your ad.

3. Interest now, sales later. The main goal of your card is to generate interest. Keep in mind that there is not enough space in your card to place your full sales message. So, just use your card to generate interest and encourage your prospects to call you to learn more.

4. Get a good mailing list. Your format and design won’t be any good if you don’t send your send your postcard printing to the right people. So you need to decide to whom you will be sending your cards. Will it be to your existing customers or to new prospects? If you don’t have your own mailing list, you can always rent one. There are actually different types of mailing lists such as lifestyle lists and new homeowner lists. Be sure to do your research to get the right target market.

5. Track the result. Be sure to track the result of your post card campaign. Doing this need not be complicated. It can be as easy as keeping a record in a note pad or your computer. Here’s some information you need to ask yourself when tracking the result:

a. How many cards did you send out?
b. The number of people who responded to your card.
c. The percentage response to the total cards sent out.
d. Are your customers new or repeat customers?
e. The names and addresses of the people who responded.
f. How many actually bought of the people who responded.
