Voice over Internet Protocol is becoming important in our every day lives. While only a few years ago it seemed a relatively new idea, now people are embracing it both in their personal communication as well as business phone systems. And though most people are aware of technologies like VoIP telephones and Skype, they often don't know how it works.

The basic concept of a phone call is that your entire transmission happens over the internet. VoIP takes the audio of what one person is saying and converts the signals into digital chunks, then essentially rebuilds them as audio data when it reaches the other person on the line.

Of course, placing that phone call can actually happen in more than one way. There are three different ways that you can communicate through VoIP. The first is computer to computer. The most common example would be through using a program like Skype. It is the easiest way to use VoIP and a way to avoid paying for long distance telephone calls. It's the easiest because there's very little needed to use this form of VoIP communication. There are plenty of free programs that are quick to download. Other than that a user just needs a sound card, an internet connection, speakers and a microphone.

Some programs allow video chat as well if a web camera is being used. When video is involved, it is transmitted in a similar way to audio. The video information breaks up into tiny pieces, are compressed and then sent over the IP network you are using.

The second way is called ATA, or analog telephone adapter. It allows you to connect a standard phone to your internet connection to use for VoIP. It takes your analog signal and converts it into a digital one. Some ATAs require software installed into the computer that's connected to your modem.

The last connection is through IP phones, also referred to as VoIP telephones. They look like a standard phone but are connected with an ethernet connector to a router. The easy thing about a VoIP phone is that it has all the features on hand for a call. Wireless phones are available too that can work at any wi-fi hotspot.

The best feature of VoIP is that calls can be made internationally with ease. IP phones can be taken on business trips and still easily access another person in any country. There are plenty of other features as well such as call forwarding and filtering, and the usual caller id, call waiting and three-way dialing.
