One of the latest innovations to come in the baby monitor industry has been the advent of video baby monitors. Video baby monitors are essentially small camera's that are placed facing a baby's crib that allow you to see and hear what's happening in the baby's room so you can ensure that they are safe.

Many different video baby monitors exist and all feature different features, from simple to sophisticated. On the lower end of the price range, you will get a small camera and a black and white monitor so you can see the baby. Even these low cost monitors include the ability to see the baby at night, which is a nice feature. Most often they only a few a different channels though, so if you are experiencing interference with other devices, this might be an issue.

Different types of models have different sized screens and camera setups. What most parents like is having a portable handset that they can carry of attach to their belt. On it you will find a small, 2-4 inch screen which allows viewing of your baby from anywhere in the home. A good quality heart rate baby monitor will have a 300 foot range, or even greater and they will allow you to see and hear as well. Of course nothing can take the place of actually checking on your baby in person, but a video baby monitor is the next best thing. One of the fears of many parents is that a baby gets tangled up in a blanket or ends up being hurt by a toy, or as they grow and explore their crib, things can go wrong and they get injured. A video monitor allow the parent to always know exactly what's going on in the room.

If you have some extra money to spend you can opt for a model with lots of bells and whistles including a large LCD screen that stays in one place; maybe the kitchen or bedroom and also includes a handset with a small LCD screen as well. Some models even have the ability to remotely turn on music or sounds to sooth a baby, which can be handy when you can't get to their room right away. For busy mom's with other children, this can be a big help.

For most parents, having a video baby monitor is the best type of baby monitor to purchase because you can see and hear. Sometimes with other baby monitors, not being able to actually see the baby has some drawbacks, so for ultimate peace of mind, opt for the video baby monitor.
