Many people who want to market online feel that putting up a website is all that is needed to begin a lucrative career in Internet marketing. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth because there are so many steps in between the decision to market online and making the first sale, that even seasoned Internet marketers, must continually sharpen their skills. This is because while in theory the concept behind online marketing might be quite simple, executing effective strategies can be extremely difficult.

One of the areas often overlooked is the degree of technical knowledge needed to operate some of the software being sold online by software developers. This software helps with building websites, search engine optimization, content management, advertising, etc. It can come as a shock that having some technical ability is necessary when starting an internet business career. For some beginning Internet marketers, this is not such a great challenge because they can afford to outsource many aspects of their business. However, the vast majority of new individual Internet marketers must manage all aspects of their online business, thus realizing the steep learning curve. With this in mind, this article will give some basic steps to starting an Internet Marketing business.

Acquiring a Domain Name

One of the first actions you need to take is to get a domain name and a hosting account. Make sure your domain name is well thought out prior to building your website because you should name your site after your domain name. You will need a web hosting company to rent you a space on their server. For a monthly or annual fee, the web hosting company will ensure that your site appears online via their server.

Creating a Website

One of the most basic steps to starting an Internet marketing business is to create a website. You can either hire a web designer or do it your self. If you want to tackle building it yourself, upfront planning must be done prior to its development. More specifically, you must decide the theme and message being conveyed to your customers. Visit other websites in your product or service area to gauge the competition and their design. If you do not have experience in web design, there are a number of software packages which make it simple for those with no design experience to create a functional website. On the other hand, hiring a web designer is worthwhile because they can work to create a website which is attractive, functional and suitable to your products and services. They can also help you include more advanced features on your website such as a shopping cart.

Your Internet Marketing Strategy

Sending out newsletters and emails can also be a part of an effective Internet marketing strategy. Newsletters can be updated and distributed monthly or quarterly, with the current issue kept on your website. Your newsletter will include information you want your users to know. Actually, the newsletter should be enriching and not just to put words on a document. In fact, this is why some newsletters are only issued on a quarterly basis. The 3 month timeframe gives you much more to include. If there is something you want your users to know before the newsletter is distributed, you can send them an email, assuming they have opted-in your email list. The newsletter will include your current promotion and advertising.

Email marketing involves sending out emails to a group of individuals who may be interested in your products and services. Again, to avoid spamming, only send out the emails to users who have requested inclusion on an email mailing list.

Optimizing Your Website

Finally, the majority of online users search for information, products and services via search engines. This means that they are likely to only visit websites that rank well and appear within the first two pages of the returned search. Therefore, if your website is not high ranking, you are not likely to generate a measurable amount of traffic from Internet users. These users are searching for specific information based on their chosen key words. You’ll want to spend a great deal of time optimizing your website so that online users can find you when they key in words relating to your products or services. Also, hiring the services of a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) specialist can be a worthwhile investment.
