1) Training - There are obvious differences in the training of Hip Hop dancers to Ballet dancers , but all great dancers have practiced countless hours to accomplish flawless technique. This completely applies to Web Designers regardless of your style or area of expertise, nothing will ever replace hours of hard work and repetition in wireframe designs, Photoshop, Illustrator or your workflow and applications of choice. We cannot expect to become experts in design without plain hard work and perseverance.
2) Inspiration - Many timeless dance pieces were inspired by nature, daily activities and even painful moments in life. If our web design is to evolve and grow, we must also have an open mind to be inspired by everything that surrounds us. The day when all web designs are inspired by other websites only, the creativity in our industry will become stagnant. It is ok to follow trends but truly awesome design comes from a spark of genius inspiration.
3) Attention to Detail - The expression on a dancers face, the perfect placement of the hand or the steady pace of a step can be the biggest difference between a great performance and a bad one. Just as a small spelling error, non-existent favicon, color clashes, broken links, inappropriate imagery or misalignment can make or break a website design. The little things DO matter.
4) Architecture and Flow - From the gentle entrance, dramatic ending to the timely climax of an effortlessly beautiful dance piece - the choreography, high difficulty moves and transitions are all careful sown together to create the ultimate audience experience. In the same way, the user experience must not be forgotten during the concept and design of websites. We must think about the location and aesthetics of navigation, where to place the important content, and site's internal linking structure. Every website should be purposed to give the user an experience they will not soon forget.
5) Teamwork and Community - From winners of "So you think you can dance" to the stars of "Swan Lake", professional dancers receive continuous opinion and criticism from teachers, piers, media and even friends and family. As the best dancers do, the best web designers take the feedback aboard and press forward to improve their skills. There is never any benefit in harbouring bitterness or anger in the face of disapproval or negative evaluation - move forward, better and evolve your designs! Conversation with like-minded people will always expand your horizon and present opportunities. Participating in popular web design and creative design forums and blogs won't get you an audition to America's national ballet company, but it will get you noticed in the world of web design and development and possibly some invaluable contacts.
Next time your jaw drops at some awesome dancing, don't forget to apply some of that inspiration into your web design!
