When people think of furnishing an office, the think of things like medical office furniture. But working from home has become a growing trend. Whether you work freelance and are your own boss, or work for a larger company off-site, it's important to furnish your home office properly. You don't want your office space to feel too homey and you don't want it to be too rigid, either. There are a few necessities to keep in mind when setting up a home office.
First, make sure your home office is in it's own room or at least is divided in it's own space. Don't set up a workspace in the bedroom as that can be easily distracting. You also don't want to combine your work with a room that's otherwise about relaxation. It will either distract you from your work, or make relaxing and sleeping more difficult, or both.
Once you have a space in your home picked out, you need to focus on furniture first. Get a desk that can hold everything you need. Something with a few drawers or cubbyholes should be enough to keep all your important folders and papers in. Some desk have a ledge underneath for your computer tower, which is a nice safe way to store it and keep it off the floor away from dirt and dust.
The next important thing is an executive desk chair. Your chair is where you are going to be for hours out of your day. Choosing the right one isn't just about comfort, it's about health. If your chair isn't right for you, it can lead to shoulder and back pain that can have long term effects. Consider something with a good amount of cushioning, both on the seat and the back of the chair. Brands like Cabot Wrenn and Keilhauer are known for having comfortable, well cushioned seats. Still, always make sure you take a break to stand and stretch every couple of hours.
Beyond these basics, you'll want to look into desk supplies. Simple things like file folders, post its, paper clips and a stapler can make all the difference. There are organizing caddies you can buy for the desk that will keep your pens, paper, and all your other necessities in a single place without cluttering the desk. A cluttered work space can be a large distraction.
With the right furniture and an organized workspace, you'll find that your office will begin to feel like a place of productivity. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and in your element, as you'll be spending so many hours of your day doing work in this space.
