i. Going to the wrong networking activities. Most startup businesses would attend as many events as they can in the hope of collecting a number of contacts. They would bring their business cards and even postcards to be handed out in the event. But quite often, the people they meet at these events are not their target market which results in only few people interacting with them. It is crucial that you get the most from networking events by attending activities where your prospects are.
ii. Hesitating to introduce yourself. A lot people are reluctant to introduce themselves to strangers. But in networking it is important that you take the initiative to introduce yourself. If you do this people will look at you as someone of authority, and they would be more than willing to talk to you.
iii. Talking too much. It’s okay to start a conversation, but you don’t have to dominate it. Remember that communication is a two way street. You have to let the other person talk as well. If you want to make a good and lasting impression to your prospects, don’t talk too much. People will think that you are trying to sell to them so they are likely to turn away from you. Keep in mind that networking events are not the time to sell your business, rather the time to introduce your self and reveal possible sales opportunities.
iv. Not asking questions. Instead of telling the other person everything about you, why not try asking them questions about their business. This will motivate the person to share details with you and show yourself as a great networker.
v. Focusing on yourself. If you try to learn about the person you are talking to, chances are they will do the same to you. So, don’t be too self-centered in your networking activities. Focus on other people and they will surely give you the information you want to know.
vi. Too distracted to focus on the person you are talking to. Sometimes, you will encounter a person who doesn’t pay attention to what you are talking to. Doesn’t this feel irritating? Well, don’t do the same to your business contacts. Pay attention to what people are telling you and they will surely listen to you as well.
vii. Poorly delivering your purpose and benefits. There are some business owners who after long hours of talking to you are still unable to know what his business is about. Don’t let this happen to you. You need to effectively deliver your purpose at first glance. This is just the same with your brochures, postcard printing, and other marketing materials. Remember that not all your prospects have all day to listen to what you have to say.
When done correctly, networking can provide a huge impact to your sales activities. So, avoid the networking blunders mentioned about to improve your results.
